McClellanville, SC

Ft. Sumter
Container ship in Charleston Bay

This morning we passed through the Elliott Cut and across Charleston's Bay.  We had a safe trip into the ICW on the other side.  All  day it was cloudy and looked like rain.  However, we stayed dry.  We motored along by ourselves, very quietly.  There were lots of shoaled areas, and George slowed down to putter through some four foot depths.  Our charts from Active Captain were accurate, showing the dangerous spots.  At 2:45 pm we went up Jeremy Creek to McClellanville, SC.

We had read about this quirky town.  Someone said there are 400 friendly people and 400 dogs.  We have met lots of friendly folks but only seen four dogs - none on the leash.  After getting tied up, we went for a walk.  What a gorgeous old town! I'm starting a file of house photos because I see all the elements that I want:  tin roof, screened porch, chimney. Here are photos we took today:

This house has palm tree trunks as columns on the front porch. There were too many beautiful houses to photograph.

This is the street we walked down.

At the end of the walk, we went to Bulls Bay Seafood.  They had shrimp for sale right off the boat (50 pound minimum) and soft shell crabs.  They let us see the soft shell crab operation.  The crabs are moved into three sections as the process happens: shell has cracked; shell is lifting off; soft shell crab.  We were able to pat the soft shell crab.  The guy told us they only stay soft shelled for 45 minutes.  They will immediately begin to grow a hard shell.  Very interesting, but not something I want to eat.  They work 24 hours a day right now.

Here you see the table with three divided sections.

The forecast this week is for rain.  We hope to move on tomorrow, but we will see.  Thunder in the distance now.  We are safe on this dock with sailing neighbors from Ontario.  Hope they can come over for happy hour.
