Ess-Kay Yards and Marina

Lake Oneida last night after the storm was rough.  This picture does not show the powerful wind.

This morning Lake Oneida was quiet, and the wind was low, so we left our perch on the wall at Sylvan Beach and went west for 22 miles to Brewerton, NY.  We arrived at 10:30, met Kim, the dock master, and filled up with diesel.  Then we pulled over to our slip.  There are seven looper boats in
this marina, including our friends from Charleston, Jean and Dave, on Knot There.  We had a cheery reunion.

George was happy to see the well stocked ship's store at Ess-Kay Yards.  He bought fuel and oil filters and ordered a couple of parts.  I washed Aunt Aggie.  We have picked up lots of dirt and stains from the locks, the rains, and the bugs. A mechanic came to work on our broken windshield wiper.  I took one of the two (!) courtesy cars to Wegman's for groceries.

Driving around I was aware of being the outsider. I smiled at the neat farms with large barns and tidy fields.  I was surprised to pass by Great Northern Mall, which has all the typical big stores.  In Wegmans I felt like Robin Williams in Moscow on the Hudson.  He plays a Russian who defects to the USA.  There's a scene in the grocery where he is overcome by the coffee choices.  I was likewise happy to see all the offerings in Wegmans: fresh fruits, four types of tomatoes, prepared foods that I wanted to eat on the spot, soft drinks stacked to the ceiling, huge cases of meats for grilling.  It was an overwhelming bounty.

It is a beautiful day, sunny and still cool.  The temperature is 71 at 5:00 pm.  Someone is mowing the grass at the marina.  Flags are stuck in the flower beds.  Everyone is preparing for July 4th.  Tomorrow there is a marina party, a potluck with the marina's grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, and the boaters' bringing side dishes and drinks.  Fireworks will happen at night out over the lake.  We are blessed to be here and to celebrate our country by seeing it with new eyes.

Happy 4th of July!
